Biographical Information:
The three young girld
who received the apparitions namely Marie Vaughan, Rosemary O’Sullivan and
Kelley noonan are each described as ordinary girls who come from practising
Catholic homes. The girls are described as pretty and the photographs show them
as beautiful girls. Marie is blond, Rosemary is a brunette and Kelly a flaming
red head. Marie Vaughan was ten years of age when she first saw Our Lady
on August 5, 1985. Marie is the most outgoing and lighthearted of the three. On
August 14, 1986 Marie saw the Sacred Heart of Jesus beside our Lady whose
Immaculate Heart was also visible. Marie was tested with some false apparitions
I August 1986. This is when Our Lady
said “The devil is going to try to make the three of you doubt” (August 15,
1986). Marie also met her own guardian angel. Her last apparition was a silent
one on March 9, 1987. Rosemary O’Sullivan was eleven years old when she
first saw Our Lady on August 5, 1985. She is shy and introspective. Our Lady
called her “Rose” and appeared to her most frequently during the first six
months. Her last reported apparition of Our Lady was on August 13, 1986. These
events started when Marie and Rosemary bicycled to visit the Grotto at
Gortaneadin on August 5, 1985. The girls simultaneously saw the glowing figure
if an exceedingly beautiful young lady whom they immediately knew was the
Blessed Virgin Mary. Frightened, yet fascinated they hurried to Rose’s house on
their bicycles and related their experience to Rose’s sister Mary. Mary advised them to return to the Grotto
again. This they did the next day and while praying the rosary Our Lady
appeared again and this time gave them a one word message “Peace!” The
apparitions continued until March 8, 1987. Kelley Noonan was just
turning sixteen when she first saw Our Lady on August 10, 1986. On this
occasion the three girls had their first apparition of Our Lady together at
Rossomore Grotto. Kelley also met her guardian angel. Her last apparition was
on February 22, 1987. All three girls are under the guidance of a spiritual
director. Mrs Mary Casey is the mother of nine children. She and her husband
are farmers. One june 25, 1986, she had her first apparition of Our Lady at
Gortaneadin Grotto, and she received her first message on July 23, 1986. She
said Our Lady spoke slowly and paused after every sentence and Her voice was as
soft as music. On August 13, 1986 this seer saw Our Lady descend a flight of
stairs. Our Lady stood close to the people at the Grotto railing. This seer’s
last apparition occurred on March 8, 1987.
The girls would go into ecstatsy and into trancelike state during the
apparitions. They were examined by a medical doctor while kneeling in this
state and were not aware of the examination. The doctor could get no response
from them and yet immnediately after the experience they were completely
normal. At first only Rose and Marie received apparitions; reportedly nearly
daily for two to three months. These all occurred at Gortaneadin. Later
commencing August 10, 1986 Kelly and the two other girls began to see Our Lady
at Rossmore. On the other hand, Mrs Mary Casey received all of her
apparitions at Gortaneadin Grotto. The messages were given over a period of
time, from August 6, 1985 to March 8, 1987 and are reminiscent of earlier
messages from Our Lady to other seers. We are urged to pray’ pray the family
rosary, pray for the souls in purgatory, sacrifice and do penance, live and
keep the Ten Commandments, go to confession and receive Communion often. Our
Lady started every message given to Mrs. Mary Casey with the word “Peace” and
often said that the youth must be encouraged to pray. Mrs Mary Casey saw Our
Blessed Mother with the Infant Jesu in Her left arm and she had a silent vision
of the Sorrowful and broken Immaculate Heart of Our Blessed Virgin Mary. It is
reported that the three girls also saw Jesus, as well as angels who sometimes
accompanied Our Lady. These angels of light would stand on either side of Our
Lady during the apparition. The girls also saw the devil during one or more
apparitions. Our Lady drew the attention to two key passages in the Bible: (i)
Matthew 7; 15-20 (the warning about false prophets) (ii) Matthew 6: 34 (the
futility of worry). Our Lady said to tell the people to drink of the water
because she blessed it. Finally Our Lady asked each of these visionaries to
spread Her messages. Mrs Mary Casey attempts to do this by being availble and
talking to the pilgrims. She attends Gortaneadin Grotto on Wednesday and Sunday
evenings for the public rosary. The three girls are obedient to their spiritual
director. They relate their story whenever asked with honesty and frakness.
There has been some confusion in the media reporting, which has caused some
suffering to these seers. On February
23, 1986, the “Miracle of the Sun” was witnessed by two nuns of an Irish Order
who first saw the phenomenon while driving their car. They abandoned their car
in the middle of the road and got out to watch “The Miracle of the Sun”. Many
others also stopped and watched. The “Miracle of the Sun” was reportedly repeated
on March 2, 1986; only this time the Host and Chalice appeared and filled the
sun. Then hands visible to the wrists were seen holding the Host over the
chalice. When these images dissapeared , the sun was cut into quarters by two
dark streaks. One vertical and one horizontal. These lines enlarged rapidly and
became a Huge Cross in the sky with the sun at the intersection of the beams.
This display was witnessed by about
thirty adults. There are several cases reported of miraculous physical cures and
many spiritual healings and conversions reported. The indications are that the
waters from the Grottos are closely associated with the healings.
