Since November 22nd, 1982, a simple home of the Christian neighbourhood of Soufanieh  in Damascus, is the scene of phenomenons which make its inhabitants relive the graces of the first Christians. Mary Kourbet Al-Akhras, known as Myrna in her family was born in 1964, from Greek-Catholic father and a Greek-Orthodox mother. She had a normal childhood and never had any serious sickness or accident. Myrna was of average intellectual level having left her Catholic and Orthodox Christian schools a year before completing the unified Syrian baccalaureate diploma.  Her ignorance of academic  subjects extends to her very elementary knowledge of religion and theology. Eventually Myrna married Nicolas Nazzour, a Greek-Orthodox, in mid-May 1982, six months before her first supernatural encounter. 1

 

 

The Story of Our Lady of Soufanieh

 

1. Exuding Oil

 

The first event started on November 22nd, 1982. Myrna was praying with other members of her family while visiting her ailing sister-in-law, when suddenly, she felt a strange and indescribable phenomenon: all her body was shivering as if some force was coming out from inside her (to quote her expression) Oil had just started to exude from her hands for the first time.  2

 

 

The second event to take place in the home of Myrna and Nicolas in Soufanieh, started on November 27th, 1982, coinciding with the anniversary date of the apparition of the Virgin Mary to Saint Catherine Labouré in 1830, at the rue du Bac in Paris, France. Oil started to exude from a small replica of the icon of the Virgin of Kazan (6 cm x 8 cm / 2.4 inches x 3.2 inches), bought by Nicolas in July 1980, at the Alexandre Nevsky Orthodox church in Sofia, Bulgaria . This oozing of the Icon slowly followed the rythm of the liturgical cycle of the Christian feasts and lasted until November 26th, 1990. During these years, the oozing of oil was interrupted from November 27th, 1985 to November 25th, 1986, but the atmosphere of peace and prayers never stopped. During this period, not one drop of oil exuded and no apparitions occured. This period explains part of Christ's message on November 26th, 1985:  “…and if My absence lasts, and the light disappears from you, do not fear, this will be for My glorification.  “ 3

 

Oil exudes from Myrna during prayers or while speaking about the phenomenon or during extasy. Oil flows on Myrna's hands, face, neck, eyes, stomach (3rd day of a Triduum Of Absolute Fasting, November 26th - 29th, 1984), feet (once). Oil flows from people's hands outside the family and Syria but always in relation to the phenomenon of Our Lady of Soufanieh. When the blue Icon (the distinction is based on the color of clothes of the Virgin) is transferred in triumph to the Byzantine Greek-Orthodox church of the Holy Cross (approx 500 meters/yards from their house) on Sunday, January 9th, 1983, it ceases to exude oil and it is replaced by the purple copy of the Icon starting January 17th, 1983. Oil flows on more than a thousand photographic reproductions of the icon. It gushes out of the ground of the terrace at the place where the Holy Virgin has appeared. It flows from a three dimensional painting of the Holy Virgin; a prayer book; the wall behind which a niche is placed, under key, the blue Icon; from the panes closing the 2 niches (the one in the entrance and the one in the hall); from the cotton inside a box destined to be distributed to invalids; a medal carried around the neck of Myrna etc.  4 

 

2. Apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary

 

The Holy Virgin Mary has appeared to Myrna five times: First on Wednesday December 15th, 1982; there was no message and Myrna ran away, frightened. Secondly on Saturday December 18th, 1982: the first message was published in literary Arabic. Thirdly Saturday January 8th, 1983: one word was pronounced by the Blessed Virgin in dialectal Arabic. Next Monday February 21st, 1983 she was given the second message; a private message pronounced in dialectal Arabic. Finally on Thursday March 24th, 1983 Myrna received a third message again pronounced in literary Arabic. The messages consist of appeals for faith, love, repentance, humility, joy in the Lord, mutual forgiveness and Unity in the Church especially during the Feast of Easter. 5

 

 

All apparitions have taken place at night, on the terrace. Only Myrna saw the Holy Virgin. An intense atmosphere of prayer and peace around her and throughout the house prevails during the apparitions. The apparition manifests itself on the horizontal branch of an eucalyptus tree situated at the edge of the river about fifteen yards (meters) to the south of the house. A globe of light appears first, then opens, enabling the sight of a blue crescent high above that disappears once the Holy Virgin appears. The Holy Virgin is first sitting on the branch, then She stands up and walks towards the terrace of the house, leaving behind Her a wake of light. She crosses the iron railing and stops on the terrace. She is dressed in white, with a blue belt, covered with a sort of hood forming part of the dress and wearing on her right shoulder, a blue shawl (similar to the painting of the Assumption by Murillo). She holds in Her right hand between the index and the annular a rosary of crystal color. The right arm is folded at the height of the chest, the left arm down by Her side. Her feet are invisible. The Holy Virgin delivers Her message to Myrna and what She says is inaudible to the persons present. Myrna repeats slowly the message just heard. At the end of the vision, the Holy Virgin returns to the eucalyptus, moving backwards. Once on the branch, She disappears first, then the globe. 6 Myrna has also received countless messages without accompanying apparitions during relious ecstatic states (see below)

 

3. Ecstasies

 

 So far, thirty-four until April 10th 2004 have been documented, eight (8) of which were outside Damascus, Syria: One at the Greek-Catholic archbishopric of Khabab, Syria, 60 km (approx 40 miles) to the south of Damascus in the presence of the Archbishop Boulos Borkhosh (without message); One at the Syrian-Orthodox cathedral of Hassaké, Syria, at more than 900 km (approx 500 miles) to the North-east of Damascus (one message); Three at Màad in Lebanon, one of which at the church village (two messages); Two in Los Angeles, USA. (two messages) and One in Braasschaatt, Belgium (one message).  In general, during these ecstasies, Myrna sees the Holy Virgin, or Christ. Usually the ecstasy is preceded by an exudation of oil from the hands, face or neck of Myrna. When she is about to see Christ, oil comes out also through her eyes and burns them before she goes into ecstasy. This stage is followed by the ecstasy itself, that is to say the state of disconnexion with the external world. During this phase Myrna does not see, hear, nor feel. Her body is stiff. She sees Christ in the form of a Person made up of light without distinguishing His face, which is not the case with the Holy Virgin. After having seen Christ, she returns to her normal state, and she takes time to recover her normal sight: her interior light prevents her from seeing anything. She has remained in this state during 72 consecutive hours, from November 26th till the 29th, 1984. Often, one to four physicians would be present during the ecstasies. A number of medical tests have been undertaken mainly on her sight, sensitivity and reflexes: all were negative. Besides the first two ecstasies of Monday October 24th, 1983, which have not been timed, the duration of the other ecstasies has varied between 5 and 75 minutes. Most of these ecstasies have been recorded on videotapes. These ecstasies were accompanied most of the time with messages summarizing the important Christian realities: Trinity, Creation, Incarnation, Divine Paternity, Mediation Of The Virgin Mary, Deserving The Kingdom Of Heaven, Repentance To The Lord, Necessity For Constant Prayer And Fasting, Sanctity Of The Marriage, Pressing Appeal For The Unity Of The Church, The Role Of Laity In The Work Of Unity. 7

 

4. Stigmata

 

 The stigmata phenomenon manifests itself within the stigmatized person with the opening, in her / his body, of wounds (stigma) reminiscent of the five wounds of Christ, plus the crown of thorns. The wounds do not suppurate and the blood is pure. The stigmatization is accompanied with intense physical and moral suffering. It happens generally during the day, in remembrance of the Passion of Christ. 

 

The first time they appeared, they were preceded by various symptoms:  - appearance of a sort of callosity in the middle of her palms, opening of the wound on her left side a few days before the simultaneous opening of the five wounds, etc... Having opened on the afternoon of Friday November 25th, 1983, the wounds are totally healed around 23:00 without leaving a scar. The wound of her left side was small, it measured a maximum of 1.5 cm (about half an inch). Eight physicians have seen the stigmata, while some of them have felt them.

 

The second occurrence of the stigmata appeared suddenly on Good Thursday, April 19th, 1984 at 15:30. The wound of her side was deep. Father Malouli measured it: 10 cm (four inches). Someone advised Nicolas to take his wife to the hospital to stitch the side wound. His reply came loud and clear: "He who has opened the wounds, will close them". Around 23:00 hours, all wounds were totally closed without leaving a scar.  

 

  The third occurrence of the stigmata appeared on Good Thursday, April 16th, 1987 in the presence of fathers Elias Zahlaoui and Joseph Malouli who have seen the first drops of blood spurt out from Myrna's forehead where a wound opened for the first time. The wound of the side measured 12 cm (4.75 inches). A French biologist, Mrs. Geneviève Antakly measured it, she calls it a scratch. This wound was open approximately ten minutes after the others and the following day it was totally closed: the two surgeons on-site have not touched them. The other wounds that were submitted to tests have taken several days to heal. Wounds on the forehead, hands and feet were healed without any treatment nor bandages. One has never used any disinfectant to clean the marks of the wounds. Archbishop Mgr Stephanos Haddad, Greek-Orthodox, has seen the first stigmata. He remained approximately one hour beside Myrna. The Syrian-Catholic Archbishop, Mgr Joseph Mounayer has witnessed the presence of the second stigmata.  Father Nicholas Baalbaki, surgeon and Greek-Orthodox priest has seen and touched the third stigmata. After the opening of the third stigmata, two French biologists Geneviève and her husband Jean-Claude Antakly as well as two surgeons Louis Kawa and George Mesmar, were present. With the exception of the stigmata on friday November 25th, 1983 (1st anniversary), it was noticed that the stigmata open only when Catholic and Orthodox celebrate Easter together. The other years, nothing happens, not even a droplet of oil, neither during the Catholic Easter nor during the Orthodox one.  On Good Thursday 1990, the stigmata opened in three stages:  at 11:14 the five wounds on the forehead,  at 13:26 the wounds on the hands and feet,  at 13:31 the side wound that measured 12 cm (4.75 inches).

 

The fourth occurrence of the stigmata appeared on Good Thursday, April 12th, 2001 in the presence of fathers Elias Zahlaoui, Boulos Fadel, Antoine Mousleh, Jean-Pierre Devedeux and Fadi Tabet.   The wound of the side measured 12 cm (4.75 inches).

 

The fifth occurrence of the stigmata appeared on Good Thursday, April 8th, 2004 in the presence of fathers Elias Zahlaoui, Boulos Fadel, Joseph Besnier, Nicolas Bustros, Louis-René Gagnon and Adel T. Khoury.  The wound of the side measured 3.5 cm (1.5 inches). 8

First apparition of the Holy Virgin - Wednesday, December 15, 1982

Given Myrna's state of panic, the first message was given to her on the second apparition.

 

Second apparition, First message - Saturday, December 18, 1982, 11:37 pm

My children, Remember God, because God is with us. You know all things and yet you know nothing. Your knowledge is an incomplete knowledge. But the day will come when you will know all things the way God knows Me. Do good to those who do evil. And do not harm anyone. I have given you oil more than you have asked for,

but I shall give you something much more powerful than oil. Repent and have faith, and remember Me in your joy.  Announce My Son the Emmanuel. He who announces Him is saved, and he who does not announce Him, his faith is vain.  Love one another.  I am not asking for money to give to churches, nor for money to distribute to the poor.  I am asking for love.  Those who distribute their money to the poor and to churches,  but have no love, those are nothing.  I shall visit homes more often, because those who go to church, sometimes, do not go there to pray.  I am not asking you to build Me a church, but a shrine.

Give.  Do not turn away anyone who asks for help.

 

Third apparition, Second message - Saturday, January 8, 1983, 11:37 pm

The Virgin was crying.  She told Myrna:  “It's all right. “  Myrna was also crying, while shouting,  “The Virgin is crying! “ At last, the Virgin withdrew, but before disappearing, She smiled softly.

 

Fourth apparition, Third message - Monday, February 21, 1983, 9:30 pm

My children,  Let it be said between us, I have come back here.  Do not insult the haughty who are devoid of humility.  The humble person craves other people's remarks to correct his shortcomings,  while the corrupt and haughty neglects, rebels, becomes hostile.  Forgiveness is the best thing.  He who pretends to be pure and loving before people, is impure before God.  I would like to request something from you, a word that you will engrave in your memory, that you shall always repeat:  God saves me, Jesus enlightens me, the Holy Spirit is my life, thus I fear nothing.  Is it not so, My son Joseph ?  Forbear and forgive.  Forbear much less than the Father has forborne.

 

Fifth apparition, Fourth message - Thursday, March 24, 1983, 9:30 pm

My children,  My mission has ended.  That night, the Angel told Me:   “Blessed are thou amongst women. “  And I was only able to tell Him that  “I am the Servant of the Lord. “  I am happy.  I Myself do not deserve to tell you:  “Your sins are forgiven. “  But My God has said it.  Establish a church. I did not say:  “Build a church. “  The Church that Jesus adopted is One Church, because Jesus is One.  The Church is the kingdom of Heaven on earth.  He who has divided it has sinned.  And he who has rejoiced from its division has also sinned.  Jesus built it.  It was small.  And when it grew, it became divided.  He who divided it has no love in him.  Gather!  I tell you:  “Pray, pray, and pray again! “  How beautiful are My children when they kneel down, imploring.  Do not fear, I am with you.  Do not be divided as the great ones are.  You, yourselves, will teach the generations THE WORD of unity, love and faith.  Pray for the inhabitants of earth and Heaven.

My daughter,  Do you wish to be crucified or glorified?  Answer: Glorified.  Christ smiles and says:  Do you prefer to be glorified by the creature or the Creator?  Answer: by the Creator.  Christ: This is realized through Crucifixion.  Because each time you look at the creatures,  the eyes of the Creator move away from you.  My daughter, I want you to apply yourself to praying and to humble yourself.  He who humbles himself, God increases him in strength and in greatness.  I was crucified out of love for you, and I want you to carry and bear your cross for Me,  willingly, with love and patience, and (I want you) to await My arrival.  He who participates in My suffering, I shall make him participate in My glory.  And there is no salvation for the soul except through the Cross.  Do not fear, My daughter,  I shall give you from My wounds enough to repay the debts of the sinners.  This is the source from which every soul may drink.  And if My absence lasts, and the light disappears from you, do not fear, this will be for My glorification.  Go to the land where corruption has prevailed, and remain in God's peace.

My daughter,  How beautiful is this place.  I shall build My kingdom and My peace in it.  I give My heart to (all of) you so that I may obtain your heart(s).  Your sins are forgiven, because you look towards Me.  And in he who looks towards Me, I shall paint My image in him.  Woe to him who represents My image but has ransomed My blood.  Pray for the sinners.  Because for each word of prayer, I shall spill a drop of My blood on one of the sinners.  My daughter, let not earthly matters trouble you, because through My wounds you will gain eternity.  I want to renew My Passion, and I want you to accomplish your mission.  You will not be able to enter Heaven unless you have accomplished your mission on earth.  Go in peace, and tell My children to come to Me any time, and not only when I renew the feast of My Mother.  Because I am with them at all times.

By doing so, you will save suffering souls.  Do not hate anyone, so that your heart not be blinded by your love of Me.  Love everyone as you have loved Me, especially those who have hated you and have spoken evil of you,  because in so doing you will obtain glory.  Continue in your life as wife, mother and sister.  Do not worry about the difficulties and the pains that will afflict you.  I want you to be stronger than them -- because I am with you -- otherwise you will lose My heart.  Go and preach to the whole world and tell them without fear to work for unity.  Man is not condemned for the fruit of his hands, but for the fruit of his heart.  My peace in your heart will be a blessing for you and for all those who have cooperated with you.

My children,  Is everything you do out of love for Me?  Do not say: What shall I do, because this is My work.  You must fast and pray, because through prayer you face My truth and you confront all enemies.  Pray for those who have forgotten the promise they made Me because they will say:  Why did I not feel your presence, O Lord, even though You were with me?  All I want is for you all to gather in Me as I am in each of you.  As for you, My daughter, I will leave you.  Do not fear if you do not hear My voice for a long time, but instead, be strong and let your tongue be a sword that speaks in My name.  And know that I am with you and with you all.

Do not fear, My daughter.  All this is happening to glorify the name of God.  Rejoice, rather, because God has allowed you to come to Me so that I can tell you:  Do not worry about what people say about you, but remain always in peace, because the creatures turn towards Me through you.  Tell everyone to pray more because they need prayer to please the Father.  May the blessings of God be upon you and upon all those who have cooperated with you out of love for Him.

My children,  You, yourselves, will teach the generations THE WORD of unity, love and faith.  I am with you.  But you, My daughter, will not hear My voice until the Feast (of Easter) has been unified.

Do not fear, My daughter, if I tell you that you are seeing Me  for the last time until the feast (of Easter) is unified.  Therefore, tell My children:  Do they want or not to see and remember the wounds of My Son in you?  If it does not pain them to see that you are suffering doubly, I Myself, am a Mother, and it pains Me to see My Son suffering repeatedly.  Remain in peace, remain in peace, My daughter.  Come, so that He may give you peace, so that you may spread it among the people.  As for the oil, it will continue to manifest itself on your hands to glorify My Son Jesus, whenever He wishes and wherever you go.  We are with you and with everyone who wishes the Feast (of Easter) to be One.

 “My children … I have given you a sign for My glorification. Stay on your path, and I am with you. Otherwise, I will close the gates of heaven in your faces.[1] But here is Mother suffering … praying … saying to me: ‘O Lord, You are love in its totality! And I say: ‘Do not despair, O Gate of Heaven, because I love them and I want them to respond to this love with giving.’[2] ‘My children: Strive to see yourselves as you truly are, and to see the extent of your faithfulness in achieving the unity of heart among yourselves. Adorn yourself with patience and wisdom. Don’t be afraid if you fail. Stay firm in hope. Trust Me. I will not abandon those who do My will.’ As for you, My daughter, be careful, and be armed with My grace. Be patient, wise, and humble. Offer up these pains with joy. I have said to you, ‘Your pains will not last long.’ Look to Me. You shall find peace and rest. It is I who strengthen you, I who desert[3] you, and I who pick you up to lead you to the joy of heaven. Persevere in prayer, and let your fasting be accompanied by meditation and solitude, and you will hear My voice in your heart.[4] Trust Me. I will not abandon you, your family, or anyone who participated [5] with you in My name [6] and for My sake.  “

How beautiful is the family whose emblem is unity, love and faith.  Its path is My path and My Mother is its support.  My children,  I am bestowing Myself upon you.  The act of adoration, meditation, thanksgiving and spiritual guidance rejoice Me.  But the whole is incomplete without your unity at the altar.  I am giving you My Body and My Blood as a proof of My fidelity and love.  Receive from Me this sacrament with trust and faith,  because this sacrament comforts you,  provides you with strength and wisdom and increases you in grace. Difficult days are coming.  Turmoil within the Church.  He, who does not enjoy true peace, will be in danger due to division.  Do not surrender to failure,  do not worry about the judgment of others on you,  do not defend yourselves  and seek only what I have prepared for you.  I am the One who take care of you because you are the work of My hands.  Prove your love to Me,  because through love I walk at your side and through the sacraments I unite Myself to you.  And do not forget that I am the reason of your existence on earth  and I am the reason of your happiness in Heaven.

This is my last commandment to you: Each one of you, return back home, however, hold the East in your hearts. From here a light emerged anew. You are its radiance in a world seduced by materialism, sensuality and fame, so much as to have almost lost its values. As for you, hold on to your Eastern identity. Do not allow your will, your freedom and your faith in this Orient to be taken away from you.
