1. Melanie Calvat

Feastday not known

Born 1831

Died  1904

Blessed Melanie Calvat was born in Corps, France, Francoise Melanie Calvat was the 4th of 10 children born to Pierre Calvat, an honest stonemason and sawyer, and Julie Barnaud, a lightheaded woman who disgracefully mistreated Melanie. Put out of the house at the age of 3, the little girl took refuge in the woods, where a beautiful little Child (the Child Jesus) visited her, calling her the “Sister of My Heart”. He consoled and instructed her, and was her only friend throughout her childhood, At the age of 3 she was stigmatized and favoured with the vision of Our Lady, who promised to watch over her as Mother and Mistress. At the tender age of 6 the occupation of shepherdess was imposed upon her and she suffered much affliction with love and patience. At 14 and looking after her master’s cattle in La Salette, located a few kilometres from Corps, this is where Our Lady appeared to her and to Maximin Giraud to transmit Her message. Melanie’s life was not a tranquil one. She entered the religious life at 20 but was exiled from France by her Bishop to Darlington England, where she was sequestered in a Carmel for several years. She was released from the vow of cloister by the Holy Father Pop Pius 1X that she might be free to accomplish her mission and was able to publish the secret as Our Lady had commanded.

2. Blessed  Maximin Giraud

Feastday 20th September

Born 1835

Died not known

Maximin Giraud was born at Corps. His mother, Anne Marie Templier hails from this same region. His Father, Germain Giraud is from a neighbouring district. The mother dies leaving Maximin, 17 months old and a daughter, Angelique, who was 8 years old. Dhortly after Mr Giraud re-married, Maximin received little attention. Under a mop of black hair there is mischief brewing, a quick eye and an agile tongue.  During the Apparition when Our Lady spoke to Melanie, Maximin twirls his hat on his walking stick, or, with the other end of the staff he pushes pebbles towards the feet of Our Lady, “Not a single one touched Her!” he would calmly reply to questioners. He had a difficult childhood, during the 3 years following the Apparition his half brother Jean-Francois, his step-mother Marie Court and his father all died. His mother’s brother, a rough and calculating man, became Maximin’s Guardian. The newspaper La Vie Parisienne published an attack against La Salette and the two children. Maximin protested and the newspaper printed a correction. In 1866 he published a short work “My Profession of Faith in the Apparition of Our Lady of La Salette”.. He died under the age of 40 and had nothing left to give but his loyalty and his faith in the Church In the person of the Beautiful Lady the always lovable and restless boy had finally found affection in the peace of God.

1. Introductory Messages

“Come near my Children, don’t be afraid. I am here to tell you great news…” 1

“If my people refuse to submit, I will be forced to let go the arm of my son. It is so strong and so heavy, I can no longer hold it back. How long a time I have suffered for you! If I want my son not to abandon you, I am obliged to plead with him constantly…” 2

And as for you, you pay no heed! However much you pray, however much you do, you will never be able to repay the pains I have taken for you. I gave you six days to work.; I kept the seventh for myself, and they will not give it to me. This is what makes the arm of my Son so heavy. And then those who drive the carts cannot swear without bringing in my Son’s name. These are two things that make the arm of my Son so heavy. If the harvest is ruined, it is only on account of yourselves. I warned you last year with the potatoes. You paid no heed. Instead, when you found the potatoes spoiled, you swore. They are going to continue to spoil, and by Christmas this year there will be none left. Don’t you understand my children? Let me find another way to say it….” 3

“If you have wheat, you must not sow it, anything you sow the insects will eat, and whatever does come up will fall into dust when you thresh it. A great famine is coming. Before the famine comes, children under seven will be seized with trembling and they will die in the arms of the persons who hold them. The rest will do penance through the famine, the walnuts will become worm-eaten, the grapes will rot…” 4

At this point the secret messages (see below) were confided to Maximin and then to Melanie…

2. The Secret Messages

Quoted from Solange Hertz’s Beyond Politics:A Metaphysical View (Lancaster, PA: Veritas Press 1995) p 62-66

“Mélanie, what I am going to tell you now will not always be secret; you can publish it in 1858. Priests, my Sons  ministers,  priests,  by  their  evil  life,  by  their  irreverences  and  their  impiety  in celebrating  the holy mysteries, by love of money, love of honour and pleasures, priests have become sewers of impurity. Yes, priests call forth vengeance, and vengeance is suspended over their heads…”

“Woe to priests, and to persons consecrated to God, who by their infidelities and their evil life are crucifying my  Son  anew!  The  sins of persons consecrated to God cry to heaven and call for vengeance, and now here is vengeance at their very doors, for no longer is anyone found  to  beg mercy and pardon for the people; there are no more generous souls, there is now no one worthy of offering the spotless Victim to the Eternal on the worlds behalf. God will strike in an unparalleled manner. Woe to the inhabitants of the earth! God will exhaust His anger, and no one  will  be  able  to  escape  so  many  evils  all  at  once.  The  heads,  the leaders of the people of God, have neglected prayer and penance, and the devil has darkened their minds; they have become those wandering stars which the ancient devil will drag with his tail to destruction. God will permit the ancient serpent to sow divisions among rulers, in all societies and in all families; both physical and moral punishments will be suffered. God will   abandon men to themselves and will send chastisements one after the other for over 35 years. Society is on the eve of most terrible scourges and greatest events; one must expect to be governed by a rod of iron and to drink the chalice of Gods wrath. Let not my Sons Vicar, the Sovereign Pontiff Pius IX leave Rome after the year 1859; but let him be steadfast and generous, let him do battle with the weapons of faith and love; I shall be with him…”

“Let him beware of Napoleon; his heart is double, and when he will want to be both Pope and emperor at the same time, God will soon withdraw from him: he is that eagle who, desiring always to rise, will fall on the sword he wanted to use to force the peoples to exalt him. Italy will be punished for its ambition in wanting to shake off the yoke of the Lord of lords; thus she  will  be  handed over to war; blood will flow on all sides; Churches will be closed or desecrated;    priests,  religious  will  be  driven  out;  they  will  be  put  to  death,  and  to  a  cruel  death. Many will abandon the faith, and the number of  priests and religious who will separate themselves from the  true religion will be great; even Bishops will be found  among these persons. Let  the  Pope  beware  of  miracle  workers,  for  the  time  has  come  for  the  most  astonishing wonders to take place on the earth and in the air…”

“In the year 1864 Lucifer, together with a great number of devils, will be loosed from hell; little by little they will abolish the faith, and that even in persons consecrated to God; they will so blind them, that without a special grace, these persons will take on the spirit of  these  evil  angels;  a number of religious houses will lose the faith entirely and cause many souls to be damned. Bad  books  will abound over the earth, and the spirits of darkness will everywhere spread universal relaxation in everything concerning Gods service:  they will have very great power over nature; there will be churches to serve these spirits.  People will be transported from one place to another by these evil spirits, and even priests, because they will not have lived by the good spirit of the Gospel, which is a spirit of humility, charity and zeal for the glory of God.  The dead and the just will be made to rise….”

(Mélanie interpolated here: That is to say, these dead will assume the aspect of righteous souls who once lived on earth, in order to seduce men more easily; these so-called resurrected dead, who will be nothing other than the devil  under these faces, will preach another Gospel, contrary to that of the true Christ Jesus, denying the existence of  heaven, if these  be  not  in  fact  the  souls  of  the damned.  All these souls will appear joined to their bodies)

“There will be extraordinary wonders every place because the true faith has been extinguished and false light illumines the world.  Woe to the Princes of the Church who will be occupied only with piling up riches upon riches, with guarding their authority and lording with pride! My Sons Vicar will have much to suffer, because for a time the Church will be handed over to great persecutions:  it will be the time of darkness; the Church will undergo a frightful crisis. With Gods holy faith forgotten, each individual will want to direct himself and rise above his peers.  Civil and ecclesiastical authority will be abolished, all order and justice  will  be  trampled underfoot.  Only murders, hatred, jealousy, lying and discord will be seen, with no love of country or family…”

“The Holy Father will suffer greatly. I shall be with him till the end to receive his sacrifice. The wicked will make a  number of attempts on his life without being able to harm him; but neither he nor his successor will see the triumph of Gods Church….”

“Civil governments will all have the same objective, which will be to abolish and make every religious principle disappear, to make way for materialism, atheism, spiritism and vices of all kinds. In the year 1865, the abomination will be seen in the holy places; in the convents the flowers of the Church will putrefy, and the devil will establish himself as king of all hearts.  Let  those who are at the head of religious communities be on their guard concerning the persons they are to receive, because the devil will use all his malice to introduce into religious orders persons given  to sin, for disorders and love of carnal pleasures will be widespread over the whole earth….”

“France, Italy, Spain and England will be at war, blood will flow in the streets; Frenchman will fight with Frenchmen, Italian with Italian; then there will be a general war which will be appalling For some time God will no longer remember France or Italy, because the Gospel of Jesus Christ is no longer known.  The wicked will unleash all their malice; even in homes there will be killing and mutual massacres….”

“With the first lightning blow of His sword, the mountains and all nature will tremble with dread, because the disorders and crimes of men are piercing the vault of the heavens. Paris will be burned and Marseille swallowed up; a number of large cities will be shattered and swallowed by earthquakes; all will seem lost; only murders will be seen, the clash of arms and blasphemies heard. The righteous will suffer greatly; their prayers, their penances and their tears will rise to heaven and all Gods people will ask pardon and mercy and will ask my help and intercession. Then Jesus Christ, by an act of His justice and His great mercy towards the righteous, will command His angels to put all His enemies to death.  At one blow the persecutors of the Church of Jesus Christ and all men given to sin will perish, and the earth will become like a desert…”

“Then there will be peace, the reconciliation of God with men; Jesus  Christ  will  be  served, adored and glorified; charity will flourish everywhere.  The new kings will be the right arm of Holy Church, which will be strong, humble, pious, poor, zealous and imitative of the virtues of Jesus Christ.  The Gospel  will be preached everywhere, and men will make great strides in the faith, because there will be unity among Jesus Christ’s workers and men will live in the fear of God. This peace among men will not last long: 25 years of abundant harvests will make them forget that the sins of men are the cause of all the woes which happen on earth…”

“A precursor of the Antichrist, with his troops drawn from many nations, will wage war against the true Christ, sole Saviour of the  world;  he will shed much blood and will seek to annihilate the cult of God so as to be regarded as a god…”

“The  earth will  be  struck  with  plagues  of  all  kinds; (Melanie  added  here:  Besides  pestilence and  famine, which will be widespread) there will be wars up to the last war, which  will then be waged by the ten kings of the Antichrist, kings who will all have a common design and will be sole rulers  of the world.  Before this  happens, there will be a sort of false peace in the world; people will think only of   amusing themselves; the wicked  will indulge in all kinds of sin; but the children of Holy  Church, children of the true faith, my true imitators, will grow in the love of God and in the virtues dearest to me.  Happy the humble souls led by the Holy Spirit!  I shall battle along with them until  they reach the fullness of  maturity. Nature begs vengeance on  account of men, and she shudders with dread, awaiting what must happen to the crime-stained earth…”

“Tremble,  earth, and you who profess to serve Jesus Christ, while interiorly you adore yourselves, tremble; for God will hand you over to His enemy, because the holy places are in a state of  corruption; many  convents  are  no  longer  houses of God, but pastures for Asmodeus and his own…”

“It will be at this time that the Antichrist will be born of a Hebrew nun, a false virgin who will be in communication with the ancient serpent, master of impurity; his father will be a Bishop (Ev.). (We spell out the word bishop here. In the French text appear only the first two letters of évèque, the French word for bishop, but there is little doubt that this is the word they stand for, because in Mélanie’s first draft of the message the whole word is spelled out.)”

“At  birth  he  will  vomit  blasphemies,  he  will  have  teeth;  in  a  word,  this  will  be  the  devil incarnate;  he will utter terrifying cries, he will work wonders, he will live only on impurities. He will have brothers who, although not incarnate devils like himself, will be children of evil; at the age of twelve, they will be noted for the valiant victories they will win; soon they will each be at the head of armies, assisted by legions from  hell….”

“The seasons will be changed, the earth will produce only bad fruits, the heavenly bodies will lose the regularity of their movements, the moon will reflect only a feeble reddish light; water and fire will lend convulsive motions to the earths sphere, causing mountains, cities, etc., to  be swallowed up….”

“Rome will lose the faith and become the seat of the Antichrist. The demons of the air, together with the Antichrist, will work great wonders on the earth and in the air, and men will become ever more perverted.  God will take care of His faithful servants and men of good will;  the Gospel  will be preached everywhere, all peoples and all nations will have knowledge of the truth….”

“I address a pressing appeal to the earth:  I call upon the true disciples of the God living and reigning in the heavens; I call upon the true imitators of Christ made man, the one true Saviour of men; I call upon my children, my true devotees, those who have given themselves to me so that I may lead them to my divine Son, those whom I bear as it were in my arms, those who have lived in my spirit; finally, I call upon the Apostles of the Latter Times, the faithful  disciples of Jesus Christ who have lived in contempt of the world and of themselves, in poverty and humility, in contempt and  silence,  in  prayer and mortification, in chastity and in union with God, in suffering, and unknown to the world.  It is time for them to emerge and come  enlighten  the  earth.  Go,  show yourselves  to  be  my  dear  children;    I am with you and in you, provided your faith is the light enlightening you in these evil times.  May your zeal make you famished for the glory and honour of Jesus Christ.  Do battle, children of light, you, the few who see thereby; for the time of times, the end of ends, is at hand…”

“The Church will be eclipsed, the world will be in consternation. But there are Enoch and Elias, filled with the Spirit of God; they will  preach with the power of God, and men of good will believe in God, and many souls  will be comforted;  they will  make great progress by virtue of the Holy Spirit and will  condemn the diabolical errors of the Antichrist. Woe to the  inhabitants of the earth. There will be bloody wars, and famines; plagues and contagious diseases; there will be frightful showers of animals; thunders which will demolish cities; earthquakes which will engulf countries; voices will be heard in the air; men will beat their heads against the walls; they will call on death, yet death will constitute their torment; blood will flow on all sides.  Who could overcome, if God doesn’t shorten the time of trial?  At the blood, tears and prayers of the righteous, God will relent; Enoch and Elias will be put to death; pagan Rome will disappear; the fire of Heaven will fall and consume three cities; the whole universe will be struck with terror, and many will allow themselves to be seduced because they didn’t adore the  true Christ living in their midst.  It is time; the sun is darkening; faith alone will survive…”

“The time is at hand; the abyss is opening.  Here is the king of the kings of darkness.  Here is the beast with its subjects, calling itself the saviour of the world.  In pride he will rise skyward to go up to Heaven; he will be stifled  by the breath of St. Michael  the Archangel. He will fall and the earth - which for three days will have been in constant change - will open its fiery bosom; he will be plunged forever with all his followers into hells eternal chasms. Then water and fire   will purify the earth and  consume all the works of men’s  pride, and everything will be renewed: God will be served and glorified…”

3. The Concluding Messages

Quoted from Solange Hertz’s Beyond Politics:A Metaphysical View (Lancaster, PA: Veritas Press 1995) p 66

Then she went on “If they are converted, rocks and stones will turn into heaps of wheat and potatoes will be self-sown in the fields…” Do you say your prayers faithfully, my children?” Replying, no, not very, they were told, “Oh, my children, you really must, night and morning. When you cant do better, say an Our Father and an Hail Mary; and when  you  have  time  and  can  do better, you must say more.  In the summer only a few older women attend Mass; the others work on Sunday all summer; and in the winter, when they don’t know what else to do, they go to Mass only to make fun of religion.  During Lent they go to the butcher shop like dogs.”

And then Our lady asked, “Havent you seen spoiled wheat, my children.?”  On being told they  hadn’t, our Lady turned to Maximin with these words: “But you, my child, you must certainly have seen some near Le Coin, with your father. The  farmer told your father, Come see how my wheat is spoiling. You went. Your father took two or three ears of wheat in his hands, rubbed them, and they crumbled into dust.  Then on the way home, when you were only a half hour from (the town of) Corps, your father gave you a piece of bread, saying to you, Here, my child, eat this year, because I don’t know who’ll be eating next year if the wheat rots like that.” And then Maximin remembered. Was our Lady warning us of the possible disappearance of  the Bread of Life from among us, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and the Holy Eucharist?   This part of the prophecy falls in no way under the prohibitive Decree of 1915. We are free to comment on it and discuss it seriously. “Well, then, my  children, you  will  pass  this  along  to  all  my  people!” said  our  Lady  as  she  was  leaving Mélanie and  Maximin.  Then once more, without turning around, she had repeated, “Well, then, you will pass this along to all my  people”.

4. An additional feature

“After a frightful war a Great King will arise and his reign will be marked by a wonderful peace and a great religious revival”

5. Description of Our Lady

"The Most Holy Virgin was tall and well- proportioned. She seemed so light that a mere breath could have stirred Her, yet She was motionless and perfectly balanced. Her face was majestic, imposing, but not imposing in the manner of the Lords here below. She compelled a respectful fear At the same time as Her Majesty compelled respect mingled with love, she drew me to Her. Her gaze was soft and penetrating. Her eyes seemed to speak to mine, but the conversation came out of a deep and vivid feeling of love for this ravishing beauty who was liquefying me. The softness of Her gaze, Her air of incomprehensible goodness made me understand and feel that she was drawing me to Her and wanted to give Herself. It was an expression of love which cannot be expressed with the tongue of the flesh, nor with the letters of the alphabet.

The clothing of the Most Holy Virgin was silver white and quite brilliant. It was quite intangible. It was made up of light and glory, sparkling and dazzling. There is no expression nor comparison to be found on earth. The Holy Virgin was all beauty and all love; the sight of Her overwhelmed me. In her finery as in Her person, everything radiated the majesty, the splendour, the magnificence of a Queen beyond compare. She seemed as white, immaculate, crystallized, dazzling, heavenly, fresh and new as a Virgin. The word LOVE seemed to slip from Her pure and silvery lips. She appeared to me like a good Mother, full of kindness, amiability, of love for us, of compassion and mercy.

The crown of roses which She had placed on Her head was so beautiful, so brilliant, that it defies imagination. The different coloured roses were not of this earth; it was a joining together of flowers which crowned the head of the Most Holy Virgin. But the roses kept changing and replacing each other, and then, from the heart of each rose, there shone a beautiful entrancing light, which gave the roses a shimmering beauty. From the crown of roses there seemed to arise golden branches and a number of other little flowers mingled with the shining ones. The whole thing formed a most beautiful diadem, which alone shone brighter than our earth's sun.

The Holy Virgin had a most pretty cross hanging round Her neck. this cross seemed golden. ( I say golden rather than gold-plated, for I have sometimes seen objects which were golden with varying shades of gold, which had a much more beautiful effect on my eyes than simple gold- plate). On this shining, beautiful cross, there was in?? Christ, it was Our Lord on the Cross. Near both ends of the cross there was a hammer, and at the other end, a pair of tongs. The Christ was skin-coloured, but He shone dazzingly, and the light that shone forth from His whole body seemed like brightly shining darts which pierced my heart with the desire to melt inside Him. At times, the Christ appeared to be dead. His Head was bent forward and His body seemed to give way, as if about to fall, had He not been held back by the nails which held him to the Cross.

I felt a deep compassion and would have liked to tell His unknown love to the whole world, and to let seep into mortal souls the most heartfelt love and gratitude towards a God who had no need whatsoever of us to be everything He is, was and always will be. And yet, O love that men cannot understand, He made Himself man, and wanted to die, yes, die, so as to better inscribe in our souIs and in our memory, the passionate love He has for us! Oh, how wretched am I to find myself so poor in my expression of the love of our good Saviour for us! But, in another way, how happy we are to be able to feel more deeply that which we cannot express!

At other times, the Christ appeared to be alive. His head was erect. His eyes open, and He seemed to be on the cross of His Own accord. At times, too, He appeared to speak: He seemed to show that He was on the cross for our sake, out of love for us, to draw us to His love, and that He always has more love to give us, that His love in the beginning and in the year 33 is always that of today and will be for ever more.

The Holy Virgin was crying nearly the whole time. she was speaking to me. Her tears flowed gently, one by one, down to her knees, then, like sparks of light, they disappeared. They were glittering and full of love. I would have liked to comfort Her and stop Her tears. But it seemed to me that She needed the tears to show better Her love forgotten by men. I would have liked to throw myself into Her arms and say to Her: "My kind Mother, do not cry! I want to love you for all men on earth." But she seemed to be saying to me: "There are so many who know me not!" I was in between life and death, and on one side, I saw so much desire by this Mother to be loved, and on another side, so much cold and indifference... Oh! my Mother, most beautiful and lovable Mother, my love, heart of my heart!

The tears of our sweet Mother, far from lessening her air of majesty, of a Queen and a Mistress, seemed, on the contrary, to embellish Her, to make Her more beautiful, more powerful more filled with love, more maternal, more ravishing, and I could have wiped away Her tears which made my heart leap with compassion and love. To see a mother cry, and such a Mother, without doing everything possible to comfort her and change her grief into joy, is that possible? Oh! Mother, who is more than good, you have been formed with all the prerogatives God is able to make; you have married the power of God, so to speak; you are good, and more, you are good with the goodness of God Himself. God has extended Himself by making you His terrestrial and celestial masterpiece. The Most Holy Virgin had a Yellow pinafore. What am I saying, yellow? She had a pinafore more brilliant than several suns put together. It was not of tangible material, it was composed of glory, and this glory was scintillating, and ravishingly beautiful. Everything in the Holy Virgin carried me firmly and made me kind of slide into the adoration and love of my Jesus in every state of His mortal life.

The Most Holy Virgin had two chains, one a little wider than the other. From the narrower one hung the cross which I mentioned earlier. These chains (Since they must be given the name of chains) were like rays of brightly shining glory, sparkling and dazzling. Her shoes, (since they must be called shoes) were white, but a silvery brilliant white. There were roses around them. These roses were dazzlingly beautiful, and from the heart of each rose there shone forth a flame of very beautiful and pleasing light. On Her shoes there was a buckle of gold, not the gold of this earth, but rather the gold of paradise. The sight of the Holy Virgin was itself a perfect paradise. She had everything needed to satisfy, for earth had been forgotten. "The Holy Virgin was surrounded by two lights. 'The first light, the nearer to the Most Holy Virgin, reached as far as us. It shone most beautifully and scintillatingly.

'The second light shone out a little around the Beautiful Lady and we found ourselves bathed in it. It was motionless (that is to say that is wasn't scintillating) but much more brilliant than our poor sun on earth. All this light did not harm nor tire the eyes in any way, In addition to all these lights, all this splendour, there shone forth concentrations or beams of light and single rays of light from the body of the Holy Virgin, from her clothes and from all over Her.

The voice of the Beautiful Lady was soft. It was enchanting, ravishing, warming to the heart. It satisfied, flattered every obstacle, it soothed and softened. It seemed to me I could never stop eating up Her beautiful voice, and my heart seemed to dance or want to go towards Her and melt inside Her.

The eyes of the most Holy Virgin, our Sweet Mother. cannot be described in human language. To speak of them, you would need a seraph, you would need more chant that, you would need the language of God Himself, of the God who formed the Immaculate Virgin, the masterpiece of His omnipotence. "The eyes of the majestic Mary appeared thousands of times more beautiful than the rarest brilliant, diamonds and precious stones. They shone like two suns; they were soft, softness itself, as clear as a mirror. In her eyes, you could see paradise. They drew you to Her. She seemed to want to draw and give Herself. The more I looked, the more I wanted to see: the more I saw, the more I loved Her and I loved Her with all my might

The eyes of the beautiful Immaculate One were like the door to God's Kingdom, by which you could see all that can glare the soul. When my eyes met those of the Mother of God and of myself, I felt inside me a happy revolution of love and a declaration that I love Her and am making with love. As we looked at each other, our eyes spoke to each other in their fashion, and I loved Her so much I could have kissed Her in the middle of Her eyes, which touched my soul and seemed to draw it towards them and make it melt into fires???. Her eyes set up a sweet trembling in all my being; and I was afraid to make the slightest movement which might cause her the smallest displeasure.

Just the sight of the eyes of the purest of Virgins would have been enough to make the Heaven of a blessed creature, enough to fill the soul with the will of the Most High amid the events which occur in the course of mortal life, enough to make the soul perform continual acts of praise, of thanksgiving, of atonement and expiation. Just this sight focuses the soul on God, and makes it like a living-death, looking upon all the things of this earth, even the things which seem the most serious, as nothing but children's playthings. The soul would want to hear no one speaking unless they spoke of God, and of that which affects-His Glory.

Sin is the only evil She sees on earth. She will die of grief unless God sustains Her.

Amen.
