Brigham Young
Guided
by revelation, Brigham Young led a group of Mormons to Promontory Point
overlooking Utah’s Great Salt Lake, where they founded Salt Lake City. Young
left this prophecy among his Discourses:
§
"All that
you know now can scarcely be called a preface to the sermon that will be
preached with fire and sword, tempests, earthquakes, hail, rain and fearful
destruction. What matters the destruction of a few railway cars? You will hear
of magnificent cities, now idolized by the people, sinking in the earth
entombing its inhabitants. The sea will heave itself beyond its bounds,
engulfing many cities. Famine will spread over the nation, and nation will rise
against nation, kingdom against kingdom, states against states, in our own
country and in foreign lands." (21) 1
