St. Anna Maria Gesualda

Born

1837
A venerable servant of God born at Siena, Italy. Her parents Luigi Giannetti & Maria kept an apothecary shop in Siena, but lost all their fortune and were obliged to go to Rome in search of a livelihood. Anna Maria was then 5. Having been educated in all the domestic Virtues she married in 1789 to Dominico Taigi, a retainer of the noble family of Chigi with whom she lived happily for 48 years. One day whilst she knelt in St Peters at confession she felt a strong inspiration to renounce such little vanities of the world that she had allowed herself. She listened to her inner voice of Grace. Soon afterwards she was received publicly in the Third Order of Trinitarians in the Church of S. Carlo alla Quarto Fontane. All the money she could spare she devoted to the poor and miserable. She never neglected her own family. Of her children 2 died young the others grew up in piety under surveillance of their mother. She converted many a sinner to God. From being 20 years old until her death at 63 she was accompanied by a mysterious light in which she saw the past, present and future events. Whenever she did this she was asked to offer some special suffering for a need of the Church or individual soul. It is in this light that Anna Maria saw a great Chastisement to come upon mankind and at the same time a great blessing. As well as prophesying the Chastisement to come upon mankind Anna Maria also spoke of an illumination of conscience in which everyone would see themselves as God sees him or her. She indicated that this illumination of conscience would result in the saving of many souls because many would repent as a result of this “warning, this miracle of “self-illumination.” The best summary of her gifts is found in the introduction to Albert Bessieres, S.J. Anna-Maria Taigi Wife, Mother and Mystic and translated into English by Fr Stephen Rigby:
“Her intellectual gifts were altogether
overshadowed by an unexampled miracle. Shortly before she had entered on a way
of perfection there began to appear to her a golden globe which became as a sun
of matchless light. In this all things were revealed to her. Past and future
were to her an open book. She knew with certainty the fate of the dead. Her
gaze travelled to the ends of the earth and discovered there people on whom she
had never set eyes, reading them in the depth of their souls. One glance
sufficed; upon whatever she focussed her thoughts, it was revealed to her and
her understanding. She saw the whole world as we see the front of a building.
It was the same with nations as with individuals; she saw the cause of their
distresses and the remedies that would heal them. By means of this permanent
and prodigious miracle the poor wife of Domenico Taigi became a theologian, a
teacher and a prophet. The miracle lasted forty-seven years. Until her death
the humble woman was able to read this mysterious sun as an ever-open book.
Until her death she looked into it solely for the glory of God; that is, when
charity suggested or obedience demanded it. Should things for which she had not
looked, or which she did not understand, appear she refrained from asking
explanations.”
“The poor, the great of the world, the
princes of the Church came to her for advice or help. They found her in the
midst of her household cares and often suffering from illness. She refused
neither her last crust of bread nor the most precious moment of her time, yet
she would accept neither presents nor praise. Her most powerful friends could
not induce her to allow them to favour her children beyond the conditions in
which they were born. When she was at the end of her resources she told God
about it, and God sent what was necessary. Her most powerful friends could not
induce her to favour her children beyond the conditions in which they were
born. When she was at the end of her resources, she told God about it and God
sent what was necessary. She thought it good to live from day to day, like the
birds. A refugee queen in Rome wished to give her money. ‘Madame,’ she said
‘how simple you are! I serve God, and He is richer than you’. She touched the
sick and they were cured, she warned others of their approaching end, and they
died holy deaths. She endured great austerities for the souls in purgatory and
the souls once set free, came to thank her…She suffered body and soul….She
realized that her role was to expiate the sins of others, that Jesus was associating
her with His sacrifice and that she was a victim of His company. The pains of
Divine Love have an intoxication no words can explain. After Holy Communion
there were times when she sank down as though smitten by a prostrating stroke.
To tell the truth, her state of ecstasy was continual because her sense of the
presence of God was continual…All pain was sweet to her…She went her way, her
feet all bloody; with shining eyes she followed the Royal way.
“Behold, then the spectacle God raised to
men’s sight in Rome during that long tempestuous period which began at the time
the humble Anna-Maria took to the way of saints! Pius VI dies at Valence; Pius
VII is a prisoner at Fontainebleau; the revolution will reappear before Gregory
XVI reigns. Men are saying that the day of the Popes is over, that Christ’s law
and Christ Himself are on the wane, that science will soon have relegated this
so-called Son of God to the realm of dreams…He will work more miracles. But at
precisely this time God raised up a woman to cure the sick…He gives her
knowledge of the past, present and future. She declares that Pius VII will
return. She sees even beyond the reign of Pius IX…She is God’s answer to the
challenge of unbelief”
“God will send two punishments: one will be in
the form of wars, revolutions and other evils; it shall originate on earth. The
other will be sent from Heaven. There shall come over the whole earth an
intense darkness lasting three days and three nights. Nothing can be seen, and
the air will be laden with pestilence which will claim mainly, but not only,
the enemies of religion. It will be impossible to use any man-made lighting
during this darkness, except blessed candles. During this alarm, the faithful
should stay in their houses and recite the Rosary and beg God for Mercy. He,
who out of curiosity, opens his window to look out, or leaves his home, will
fall dead on the spot….” 1
“On this terrible occasion so many of these
wicked men, enemies of His Church, and of God, shall be killed by this divine
scourge, that their corpses round Rome will be as numerous as the fish, which a
recent inundation of the Tiber had carried into the city…” 2
“All the enemies of the Church, whether
known or unknown, will perish over the whole earth during that universal
darkness, with the exception of a few whom God will soon convert. The air shall be infected by demons who will
appear under all sorts of hideous forms….” 3
“Religion shall be persecuted, and priests
massacred. Churches shall be closed, but only for a short time. The Holy Father
shall be obliged to leave Rome…” 4
“The
Pope shall convoke a (general) council (that of the Vatican). A new
constitution of the Church shall be proclaimed in it…. one after the other all
the Episcopal Sees in the Catholic Church, the respective bishops of which were
to oppose the definition at the late council at the Vatican…a very short time
after the promulgation of the new Constitution of the Church by the general
council, the Emperor of the French would declare war against Prussia, by which
he would be defeated and made prisoner; that France should be humbled, because
she would not know how to profit by her advantages as first daughter of the
Church, and the protectress of the Holy See.” 4a
“France will fall into frightful anarchy.
The French people shall have a desperate civil war, in which old men themselves
will take up arms. The political parties having exhausted their blood and their
rage, without being able to arrive at any satisfactory understanding, shall at
the last extremity agree by common consent to have recourse to the Holy See.
Then the Pope shall send France a special legate, in order that he may examine
the state of affairs and the dispositions of the people. In consequence of the
information received, His Holiness himself shall nominate a most Christian king
for the government of France…” 5
“During
this time there shall be a great universal revolution. The priests shall almost
everywhere be massacred to such an extent that, in order to find one of them
alive, it shall be necessary to travel several days. The churches shall be
closed, but only for a short time.” 5a
“Religion shall be persecuted, and priests
massacred Churches shall be closed, but only for a short time. The Holy Father
shall be obliged to leave Rome…” 5b
“A heavenly apparition shall come to reassure the faithful. Saint Peter and St. Paul will appear on the clouds, and all men shall see them; and, in a supernatural manner, faith shall return to their hearts. Innumerable conversions of heretics shall cause universal edification.” 5c
“St Peter and St Paul will intervene in the
election of a new pope” 6
“After the three days of darkness, Saints
Peter and Paul, having come down from heaven, will preach throughout the world
and designate a new Pope. A great light will flash from their bodies and settle
upon the cardinal, the future pontiff. Then Christianity will spread throughout
the world. He is the holy pontiff chosen by God to withstand the storm. At the
end he will have the gift of miracles and his name shall be praised over the
whole earth. Whole nations will join the Church shortly before the reign of the
Antichrist. These conversions will be amazing. Those who survive shall have to
conduct themselves well. There shall be innumerable conversions of heretics,
who will return to the bosom of the Church; all will note the edifying conduct
of their lives, as well as that of other Catholics. Russia, England and China
will come into the Church…” 7
“At first will come several terrestrial
scourges, as great wars, through which many millions will run into destruction.
After that will come the celestial scourge in full severity, such as has never
been. It will be short, but will cut off the greater part of mankind. Yet, before
that, five big trees have to be felled…” 9
“One
day, Anna Maria, while shedding a torrent of tears, prayed and offered her
actions and sufferings for the conversion of sinners, for the destruction of
sin, and that God might be known and loved by all men. Then, God manifested to
her the horrible sins of persons of every condition, and how grievously He was
offended. At this sight, the servant of God experienced a profound sorrow and,
sighing, she exclaimed: ‘Dearly beloved! what is the remedy for this disaster?
’ Jesus Christ answered: ‘My child, the Church, My spouse, My Father, and
Myself shall remedy everything. For after a punishment . . . those who shall
survive shall have to conduct themselves well.’ At this point she saw
innumerable conversions of heretics, who will return to the bosom of the
Church; she saw, also, the edifying conduct of their lives, as well as that of
all other Catholics.” 10
